A Sampling of Self Care Ideas
All over the media, it seems like “self care” is the latest buzzword. That could be because of the hectic, fast paced, and stressful lives most people tend to live. As a counterbalance, it’s so important to take care of your mind, body, and spirit. Unfortunately, that’s sometimes easier said than done. Here are a few self care ideas that you could implement in order to help balance your lifestyle.
Mind
1. Fix something that’s been nagging you. This could be a loose cabinet handle in your kitchen, a lightbulb that’s gone out or something that’s been lingering on your to do list.
2. Be grateful. Remind yourself of everything you have in your life that you have to be grateful for. Write it down on a piece of paper along with any compliments you’ve received in the past month.
3. Get out in nature. Try going for a relaxing stroll in the forest or at the beach. Cloud watching is also very relaxing. Lie on your back, relax, and just watch the sky.
4. Pay complete attention to something you usually do on autopilot. This could be eating breakfast or brushing your teeth. Increasing your mindfulness and self awareness is a great form of self care.
5. Declutter your space. Cleaning up your workspace or living space can immediately help your mind feel more relaxed.
Body
1. Have a good laugh. Search for a funny dog video on youtube. Having a strong laugh at least once a week is very healthy.
2. Breathe in and out deeply. Breathe into your abdomen, and let the air puff out your stomach and chest.
3. Get a good stretch in. If you’re at work, you can always head to the bathroom to avoid strange looks.
4. Make a slight change to your diet. Pick two healthy breakfasts, lunches, and dinners and rotate for the week.
5. Take a nap. Just ten to twenty minutes can reduce your sleep debt and leave you ready for action.
Spirit
1. Help someone. Open a door, pick up someones coffee, or give out a confidence boosting compliment to a stranger.
2. Check in with yourself. Sit quietly and just name without judgment what you’re feeling. Tune in to your emotions.
3. Write out your thoughts. Go for fifteen minutes on anything bothering you. Then throw the paper away. It’s incredibly therapeutic.
4. Choose who you spend your time with today. Hang out with positive people, not negative ones that rob your energy.
5. Get positive feedback. Ask three good friends or family members to tell you what they love about you.
