Building Self-Esteem

Everyone knows how important it is to improve your feelings of self-worth. Having higher self-esteem allows you to not only feel better about yourself, but to become more resilient as well. Recent studies based on brain scans demonstrate that when our self-esteem is higher, emotional experiences, such as anxiety, fear or rejection, feel less painful. In turn, we are able to stabilize our emotions quicker.

Although we all want to have higher self-esteem, it doesn't always seem like an easy task. In the world we live in today, we tend to be surrounded by so many things daily that make us feel worse about ourselves.

Below are some suggestions you can use to help boost your self-esteem:

1) Use Positive Affirmations

A regular and sincere practice of daily affirmations will enable you to feel better about yourself one day at a time. For best results, try making a set of 5 to 7 self-esteem affirmations when repeating.

2) Identify Your Competencies & Develop Them

It is key to develop your abilities and achievements in your life that matters the most to you. If you know that you are a great cook, make an effort to cook more and explore your palate! Figure out what you are best at and find opportunities and careers that accentuate them.

3) Learn To Accept Compliments

This can be a tough one. The best way to stop yourself from not receiving compliments is to prepare simple set responses and train yourself to use them automatically whenever you get good feedback. In time, your impulse to deny compliments will fade and your self-esteem will in turn, become higher.

4) Eliminate Self-Criticism & Introduce Self-Compassion

Unfortunately, when our self-esteem is low, we tend to damage it further by being self-critical. Try substituting self-criticism with self-compassion. Specifically, when you find yourself being self-critical, ask yourself what you would say to a friend in that exact situation. Then direct those comments to yourself!

5) Affirm Your Real Worth

Make a list of qualities about yourself that are meaningful to you in context. For example, if things are not going your way at work, make a list of reasons why you are a valuable employee (your have a strong work ethic and are responsible). Do this exercise whenever you need a self-esteem boost.

Although improving self-esteem requires a lot of work, it will provide a great emotional and psychological return on your investment!
