Modern Therapy on Campus: NYU
NYU Active Minds
Eating Disorders Awareness Talk
Eating disorders (ED) affect 20 million women and 10 million men in the United States. Research has shown that there are a multitude of factors that contribute to the development of eating disorders. Some of these factors include: poor body image perception, low self-esteem, dieting fads, and societal weight shaming. It is important to bring education and awareness for ED as it is a psychological illness with the highest fatality rate.
Due to the prevalence of ED on college campuses, Modern Therapy was invited to speak with the students of NYU. The event was held on March 29th, 2018 in the Global Center for Academic and Spiritual Life.
Co-founders Cassie and Brandon Christensen discussed some common ED, potential warning signs and risk factors, as well as treatment and recovery strategies over the course of the 1.5 hour event! Afterwards, the floor was opened for a lively discussion and Q&A. Students jumped in to ask questions and some shared their own personal stories with friends who they have seen struggle.
Overall, it was an incredible experience to be able to present to such an engaged group of intellectuals. We extend our sincere thanks to NYU Active Minds team for the invitation and we look forward to visiting again!
