Gabriela Ortiz, LPC

THERAPIST

I like to explain the process of therapy to my clients whether it is their first time in therapy or not. This provides us with the opportunity to discuss any expectations the client might have (if any) and it allows us to be on the same page as we begin our journey working together.

Therapeutic Style + Approach

What inspired you to become a therapist?

My passion for helping others, personal experiences, and combating stigmas surrounding mental health conditions.

Personal Touch + Personality

What hobbies or interests do you have that might surprise people?

I enjoy building Legos, reading, and participating in sports.

WORKING WITH CLIENTS

What do you find most rewarding about your work as a therapist?

It is very rewarding to establish a meaningful therapeutic relationship with my clients. It is also particularly rewarding being the witness of the positive changes that they make especially when they sometimes do not see it themselves.

Therapy Philosophy

What is your approach to helping clients set and achieve their goals?

I utilize a SMART goal framework to ensure goals are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. I frequently monitor their progress, identify obstacles, and make adjustments to their goals as needed.

Personal Well-Being +  Self-Care

What’s one self-care tip you often recommend to clients?

I often recommend my clients to go out for walks to get natural sunlight. Natural sunlight helps increase our serotonin levels, which plays a role in our mood.

Final Thoughts + Encouragement

What would you say to someone who is nervous about starting therapy?

I would tell them that we (therapists) are just regular people who want to get to know and understand their stories. We want to help them in the best way that we can. I would also tell them to think about us as a human version of a diary or journal that is a safe space to verbalize thoughts and feelings. However, the benefits of having a human version of a diary/journal is that we can provide supportive feedback if needed, we are confidential (unless you are a danger to yourself or someone else), and we can gently/lovingly challenge them when needed.
