“The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.”
– Mark Twain
If you’ve been feeling unfulfilled and lost in your work or personal life, it’s essential that you put some energy into figuring out what you’re truly meant to do. Here are some ideas that can help you get started.
Don’t confuse a job with a purpose.
If you feel stuck at a job doing something you know you aren’t meant to be doing, don’t let it defeat you. A job is a job. You’re there to earn a living and there is nothing wrong with that. Purpose can be found outside of those hours. The important thing is making the commitment to begin the search.
Search out different opportunities.
You don’t know if the outfit will fit until you try it on. The best way to search for your calling is to explore lots of different activities and endeavors that interest you.
Change your perspective.
Sometimes all it takes to find your calling is to change your perspective. For example, if you provide customer service look at every conversation as a chance to brighten someone’s day.
Do not follow someone else’s dream.
You can’t live your own dream when you’re busy pursuing someone else’s. You’re never going to be able to please everyone, so you may as well focus on what pleases you.
Leverage your talents.
Do you have a hobby or side passion that you’re really good at? Why not try monetizing it so that it can become more than just a hobby – but a full time job.
Trim your social circle.
They say you are who you hang out with. When’s the last time you did a social audit? Are the people you’re spending time with adding value to your life? Perhaps the people around you are hindering you from being able to pursue your calling.
Read books.
One book has the ability to change your life. If you like the idea of reading, more than you actually like to read, try an audio book. Regardless of how you consume the content, there are so many authors that have been where you are and have valuable lessons to teach you on the next steps you should take.
Spend time before you spend money.
Finding your calling should not be a prohibitively expensive process. Before dropping a ton of money on a PHD or relocation, make sure you do your research.
Don’t be afraid to pull triggers.
If you find yourself coasting, shake things up a bit. The easy path is not always the better one. Look at every failure as a lesson and you’ll never fail a day in your life.
Relax.
You have time. If you search consistently, you’ll find what you’re meant to be doing.
