Right now, for many of us, the world is an uncertain, and at times, scary place. We may feel hopeless and unfocused at present, reading articles and watching reports that exacerbate those feelings. However, amidst this negativity there are many individuals engaging in acts of kindness and positivity, as well as acts of heroism as the world battles against COVID-19. It can be helpful to hear about these amazing feats amidst the negative news we see, in order to boost our spirits and know that there is community around us even in difficult times. Here are a few things going on that you may or may not be aware of that are bound to lift you up:

1. Individuals are self-organizing to help others in need

Grassroots groups are popping up in cities and towns across the U.S. as well as in other countries to support those in need. Termed “care-mongering”, people work together to give away food, foster animals, pick up medications and support one another with any errand or task needed. In one neighborhood in Queens, NY this group has had their children paint rainbows to hang on windows for essential workers as a sign of solidarity. Other groups have ordered meals for healthcare workers and even begun creating PPE through 3D printing and other means.

2. Quarantined residents sing from their balconies in unison

If you haven’t seen the video across social media, Italians took to their balconies during the quarantine to sign together. This practice has been seen in Israel and Lebanon. In Spain, neighbors joined one another for fitness classes on their roofs and balconies. In Greece and Italy, DJs have performed for their neighbors and brought dance parties to each balcony and roof.

3. Various companies offer their services free of charge to those at home

As we hunker down, companies are trying to keep us entertained and working as best as possible. Internet providers, orchestras and other performance-services like the Metropolitan Opera and some broadway shows are streaming for free until they reopen. Zoom is providing video-conferencing services to support students as well as Spectrum with Internet service.

4. Healthcare workers get applauded

In Spain, neighbors stepped out on their balconies at 10 p.m. one evening to give a round of applause to healthcare workers fighting against COVID-19. This has been replicated in Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, and areas of the U.S.

5. NBA players financially support area employees amidst layoffs

With the NBA currently suspended, those who work as vendors and for the arenas used for games are out of work. Players are donating thousands of dollars to make up these employees’ salaries.

6. Medical staff from China have brought medical supplies to aid Italy

The Chinese Red Cross flew medical experts from China to Rome with over 30 lbs. Of respirators, masks and other supplies to help Italy fight COVID-19.

7. Stores have designated special hours for at-risk shoppers

Across the globe grocery stores and pharmacies have designated specific hours (typically at open) for at-risk shoppers. The goal is to reduce lines and crowds for those at risk.

8. Museums, aquariums, actors, musicians, authors and more are offering support and community online

Musicians such as Bon Jovi, Steve Martin, and others are singing while actors such as Josh Gad are reading nightly stories while we are all kept inside. The Cincinnati Zoo, Monterey Bay Aquarium, and the Louvre among others are providing tours and daily viewings to those interested online regularly. Author and illustrator Mo Williams has a daily drawing hour for kids (and adults too). All of these are bound to put a smile on your face as these individuals remain indoors as well.
