4 Lifestyle Tips To Manage Stress
Stress occurs as a result of a demand that’s placed on us. Some of the stress we feel can be beneficial and provide a boost of drive that’s needed to get through a certain situation. However, too many of us struggle from long term chronic stress which can have severe health consequences. Chronic stress can cause anxiety, insomnia, muscle pain, high blood pressure, and a weakened immune system. By finding positive ways to manage stress as it occurs, the negative symptoms and the long term consequences that come from it can be reduced. Here are a few ways to manage that unwanted excess stress in your life!
1. Learn To Be Present
Often times, stress can compound and transform into anxiety when we have too much of it in our lives. Taking a moment to check in with yourself and your body the next time you feel stressed can help reduce it. Mindfulness and meditation practices have been shown to reduce the symptoms of stress and anxiety. Try taking 10 minutes a day to close your eyes, concentrate on your breathing, and clear your mind.
2. Give Yourself Permission To Check Out
Stress can be incredibly controlling. If your main source of stress is coming from work or personal relationships and you’re struggling to manage it, give yourself permission to unplug for a bit. Running yourself into the ground is not in anyone’s best interest. It doesn’t have to be for a long time, but just enough to remind yourself that you’re in control. Implementing a small daily ritual such as disconnecting from electronics after you 6pm can reinforce this!
3. Eat Healthy & Exercise
Stress often leads to other unhealthy behaviors. When you’re burning the candle at both ends, you may find yourself drinking one too many cups of coffee or indulging in unhealthy foods which only exacerbate you’re symptoms. Implementing 30 minutes of daily exercise or even some small diet changes can create an immediate reduction in stress levels.
4. Prioritize Self Care
Self-care is important to maintain a healthy relationship with yourself as it produces positive feelings and boosts your confidence and self-esteem. Try scheduling self care appointments in your schedule that are solely dedicated to your self preservation and mental wellness. This could be as simple as spending 1 hour a week to your favorite hobby, or taking a short trip which may give you a new perspective. A little self care has probably been long overdue!
