With everything going on in the fast paced world we live in, it’s easy to take everyday things for granted. That’s why it’s important to intentionally put focus on giving thanks and remembering how lucky we are to have everything that we do in our lives. Research according to Harvard Health, found that gratitude is strongly and consistently associated with greater happiness. Here are some ways you can work to become more appreciative.
Keep a gratitude journal.
Make it a habit to write down a daily list of 5-10 things that you appreciate in your life. Doing this will remind you of everything you have that you can be grateful for.
Write a thank-you note.
Much of our happiness comes from creating and maintaining good relationships. Try expressing your gratitude for a close relationship by writing a thank-you letter expressing your enjoyment and appreciation of that person’s impact on your life. Doing this every month will be sure to make you more appreciative of your relationships.
Thank someone mentally.
No time to write? It may help just to think about someone who has done something nice for you, and mentally thank the individual.
Make something for someone else.
Giving to other people is one way to show appreciation and it feels good! In fact, the act of giving is closely tied with increased happiness. Giving can include something physical, or giving of your time. Try baking some cookies for a friend, or spending an afternoon with a grandparent!
Pray or meditate.
People who are religious can use prayer to cultivate gratitude. Likewise, mindfulness meditation involves focusing on the present moment without judgment. Either one of these practices can be used to build gratitude.
