At Modern Therapy, we love to support family and community mental health initiatives. We collaborated with the Family Support Organization (FSO) of Bergen County to run a workshop on how to grow a healthy family dynamic.
The FSO of Bergen County is a family-run, county-based not-for-profit. They are a component part of the New Jersey Department of Children and Families (NJDCF) within the Division of Children’s System of Care (CSOC). They provide direct family-to-family peer support to families enrolled in the Care Management Organization. They also provide education, advocacy, and other supports to family members of children with emotional and/or behavioral challenges.
All programs are provided at no cost to participants. For more information, check out their website by clicking here.
Cassie Christensen, LCSW presented on How to Grow a Healthy Family Dynamic
Children thrive on feelings of belonging and the affection that comes from having caring and supportive families. All families go through good and difficult times, however, a family with a healthy dynamic is able to interact with each other in a respectful and safe way. It was a great evening of learning strategies to improve family’s dynamic, including:
-
Each family member is valued and respected
-
Two way communication exists
-
Effort to understand and trust others exists
-
Family is collaborative and engaged
-
Commitment to family’s holistic well-being is present
We discussed ways to improve communication within the home by breaking down bigger problems into simpler, more manageable tasks. Each member got to share a little about their personal journeys. It was a very educational night!
