We joined the effort with hundreds of people to raise awareness and funds that allow the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) to invest in new research, create educational programs, advocate for public policy, and support survivors of suicide loss.
AFSP has set a goal to reduce the annual suicide rate 20% by 2025. The walk gives people the courage to open up about their own struggle or loss and the platform to change our culture’s approach to mental health. It is an amazing event that brings communities together to raise voices for mental health awareness and suicide prevention.
Pre-walk activities included choosing honor bead necklaces, which allowed each walker to wear a color that showed their personal connection to the cause. We chose the teal beads.
-
White – Lost a child
-
Red – Lost a spouse or partner
-
Gold – Lost a parent
-
Orange – Lost a sibling
-
Purple – Lost a relative or friend
-
Silver – Lost first responder/military
-
Green – Struggled personally
-
Blue – Support the cause
-
Teal – Friends or family of someone who struggles
The pre-walk also included the option to write a note for those who struggle with suicidal thoughts and ideations. Participants wrote a personalized note to be given out to those who reach out for help.
The walk ended up with beautiful weather and a ton of people out to support the cause. The day was extremely inspirational to continue the efforts of spreading awareness about suicide prevention and how we can all get involved.
