Life as a new mom is amazing, surprising, but also intimidating! Being a new mom is like navigating a brand new world. Here are some tips for things you may encounter in the next few months.
1) Find what works for you
Everyone will give you advice, which is great! But make sure you’re taking the advice that works for you specifically. If someone tells you to do something that doesn’t work, don’t stress yourself out trying to do it!
2) Try not to obsess over germs
While you obviously don’t want your baby to get sick, sanitizing your hands every time you touch a doorknob is a little excessive. Keep them away from sick people and try to relax! If your baby stays inside all day, their immune system won’t build up and they’ll end up getting sick more often.
3) It’s okay if the house isn’t clean and dinner isn’t ready
Some days you won’t get everything done that you want to. Some days will feel like they last forever and some rooms may look like a bomb went off – that can be the day when you order a pizza. You are a mom and you are a rockstar for getting through the day!
4) Ask for help if you need it
If being home all day with your child is overwhelming, ask for help. Ask a friend or family member to come visit and help you out. It’s okay to ask for help, it’ll let you recharge.
5) Write things down
Dates, questions for the doctor, things you don’t want to forget. Your memory tends to be cloudy when you are juggling so much, so take the time to write things down so you can easily reference them.
6) Find a hobby aside from mothering
Being a mother is the best job in the world, but if you don’t do other things as well, you’ll get burned out. Find something that can challenge you and keep you learning. Don’t be afraid to try new things!
7) You are not a bad mom
“You aren’t a bad mom. You’re a good mom having a bad day.” You are going to have bad days and that’s okay! Not everyday is going to be perfect or productive and it’s important to not get caught up in that.
8) Pay attention to yourself
Postpartum depression happens to a lot of women (read about it here). If you aren’t happy, don’t feel like talking to people, or feel down for longer than two weeks, get help before it gets worse. There are treatment options to help you feel better.
