It might seem like other people are more charismatic than you, or charming perhaps. The truth is that likability, like any other skill, can be developed and honed. Here are 6 key principles you should be implementing in your life to make people like you more. These were taken from the book: The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.
Principle 1: Become genuinely interested what the other person is saying.
People know when you’re truly listening to them. If they feel like you are distracted or uninterested, they may take personal offense.
Principle 2: Smile.
People read your body language and facial expressions far more than hear your words or hear your tone of voice. A big smile is immediately welcoming, disarming and relaxing to the person you are greeting.
Principle 3: Use their name.
Using another person’s name is to that person the sweetest and most important sound in any language.
Principle 4: Encourage others to talk about themselves.
People love to talk about what they care most about. In many cases, that is themselves. In your next conversation, try to ask lots of questions about the other person and talk less about yourself.
Principle 5: Talk in terms of the other person’s interest.
If you meet someone and spend most of the time talking about something they are not interested in they probably won’t want to continue the conversation.
Principle 6: Make the other person feel important – and do it sincerely.
Try to give a genuine compliment about the other person. Do so sincerely and it will be much appreciated.
