Taking Time for a Mental Health Check-In

The Importance of Mental Health Check-Ins

Taking the time to check in with yourself is an important routine to establish. Oftentimes, check-ins are done for physical health—like routine doctor or dentist visits, or noticing when an illness or aches and pains begin. When a headache or fever shows up, most people will take medication to feel better. While it’s important to pay attention to your physical health, it’s equally important to focus on your mental well-being. Sometimes you may experience stress, sadness, or anger without even realizing it or without taking the time to care for yourself in those moments.

Step 1: Notice Your Emotions

Begin by taking at least one moment each day to evaluate how you are feeling. Ask yourself, “How am I feeling today?” Rate any critical emotions—such as anger, sadness, stress, or happiness—on a scale of 1 (least) to 10 (most). Be honest and avoid judgment. If you are not honest, your check-in won’t be as effective.

Step 2: Identify Contributing Factors

If you find yourself rating difficult emotions higher on the scale, acknowledge them and see if you can identify what may be contributing to your current mood. Ask yourself, “What is causing me to feel this way?” Sometimes there may not be a clear answer—and that’s okay. You may just not be having the best day. But if you can recognize stressors, you can explore whether there’s anything you can do to address them. Examples include taking a break, getting fresh air, practicing deep breathing, or tackling a problem head-on.

Step 3: Reflect on Joy and Self-Care

Alongside emotional check-ins, reflect on your self-care for the day. Ask yourself, “What have I done to bring joy into my day?” If you notice you haven’t done much, see this as an opportunity to plan something—whether it’s a favorite hobby, connecting with a friend, or simply setting aside time to relax. Intentionally weaving joy into your daily routine can boost your overall mood.

Step 4: Assess Physical Well-Being

Your physical state has a direct impact on mental health. Ask yourself, “Have I been taking care of my body today?” Consider how much water you’ve had, what kinds of foods you’ve eaten, how much sleep you got the night before, and whether you’ve been physically active. Tending to these areas helps keep your body and mind in balance.

Takeaway

Checking in on your mental health daily is a simple yet powerful way to maintain overall well-being. If you know you’re going into a day filled with stressors, you may find it helpful to do more than one check-in. By making emotional, self-care, and physical check-ins part of your routine, you create space to better understand yourself, reduce stress, and nurture your mental health.
