Tips to Improve Self-Esteem

Self-esteem is our opinion of our self and our worth. It is our perception of our value as a person, particularly in regard to our achievements, purpose in life, and how we relate to others. Having healthy self-esteem means feeling good about ourselves, our abilities and our thoughts.

A person with healthy self-esteem believes that they are doing the best they can. They accept that life isn’t perfect and they roll with the punches. They are comfortable with who they are, which allows them to adapt well to adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats or even significant sources of stress.

Tips to improve your self-esteem:

1. Write 3 things down every morning that you appreciate about yourself.

By making this a morning ritual, it starts the day off on a positive note and allows us to focus on the positive aspects of ourselves, rather the the negative.

2. Look at mistakes and failures in a more positive way.

If you are looking to accomplish anything that is truly meaningful, it will mean stepping outside of your comfort zone. This often means stumbling and falling along the way. That is OK and it is normal. Try to see the upside in every situation and look at failure as an opportunity to learn and grow.

3. Be kinder than usual towards other people.

When you are kind towards others, you tend to treat and think of yourself in the same fashion.

4. Stop falling into the comparison trap.

Comparing your life to others can be a destructive habit. There could always someone who has more than you in some area. Instead, try to compare yourself to yourself and focus on how far you have come. This will not only motivate you, but also raise your self esteem.

5. Spend more time with supportive people.
