For many the summer is a time for relaxation, sunshine, vacations, and more. However, for others, the summer can be stressful. The heat, co-workers going on vacation and leaving more tasks, and others can lead to negative emotions. No matter what time of year, we all need self-care. If you find yourself struggling more so in the summertime, consider these strategies to boost your mood.

  • Get Your Vitamin D: Sunlight increases our intake of Serotonin and Vitamin D which boosts our moods. Getting outside for a beach trip, walk, lunch outdoors, or time in a pool can all assist in increasing positive mood and decreasing negative emotions that might arise.

  • Focus on Self-Care: Review your sleep hygiene as well as daily activities like healthy eating and exercise. We know the impact all of these can have on emotional wellbeing. Take time to evaluate whether you are getting the nutrients, rest, and care you need and deserve.

  • Engage in Relaxation Techniques: Mindfulness strategies like deep breathing and meditation can boost your mood, increase your focus, and decrease feelings of stress and anxiety. Try these outside and you’ll get a double dose of positivity!

  • Take a Mental Health Day (Or Two): Take some space away from work to do things you want to do. Sit in your backyard and have a staycation! Finish that art project you’ve been working on. Watch a movie you’ve been wanting to see. Take time for yourself to focus on activities that bring you joy in order to take space from the stressors that come up on the day to day.

  • Plan a Vacay: Plan a holiday somewhere you’ve wanted to go. Whether traveling this summer or planning ahead for a warm getaway in the winter. Planning a trip gives you something to look forward to as well as another fun activity to engage in as you plan the activities you’ll participate in.

No matter how you choose to take care of yourself this summer, know that it is natural to to experience ups and downs no matter the season. Take time to ensure you are listening to yourself and your needs.
